Facebook Twitter App

Last month when messages via penguin fb started appearing on Twitter from a Facebook engineer it was suspected that Facebook was up to something. Now it has been confirmed. Facebook has introduced a new platform that allows Facebook Page administrators to update their Page and Twitter simultaneously.

In a blog post Facebook explains how this works:
“If you manage a Facebook Page, you now will be able to decide whether to share updates with their Twitter followers, and you also will be able to control what type of updates to share: status updates, links, photos, notes, events or all of them. If you have multiple Pages, you will have the option to link each of those Pages to different Twitter accounts. This new feature will only link Facebook Pages to Twitter, not your individual profile. It will soon be available at http://www.facebook.com/twitter”

From a convenience standpoint this will save a lot of time for Twitter users that also have Facebook Pages. It does however create a lot of intrigue in the on-going Facebook vs. Twitter battle and it is a bit surprising to see Facebook so openly acknowledge the reach of Twitter. Clearly Facebook is hoping that the Facebook Page will become the first stop for admins when updating their pages.

The result of this is still unknown but would likely mean lots of “via Facebook” messages showing up on Twitter. This could make Facebook one of Twitter’s most popular clients. However users should not expect that this service will be extended to user profiles any time soon as the result of this would be much more advantageous to Twitter than Facebook.

The question therein lies, as an Administrator of your Facebook page, will you use the new functionality to post to your Twitter page or will you continue to do it manually?
