A few years ago any internet marketing plan which involved SEO and great content generation was good enough to drive traffic to a website even in the most competitive niches. With the invent of social media the entire game has changed completely especially with the inclusion of social showing up in search results of Google in the next few months.

Since traditional forms of advertising including print, radio and tv have become much less effective, businesses today are beginning to compete much more aggressively to increase their online PR via comprehensive social media strategies.

Our team at Brave Media which has been working hard to be at the forefront of internet marketing here in Vancouver has been preaching the importance of social media since it’s inception, but even we were a little surprised with the recent change of events. Not that social media has become so intertwined with every marketing plan but the fact that businesses were so resistant to social media strategies as part of their internet marketing objectives even until the beginning of this year. But now?

Now it’s a complete 360! These businesses have not only realized how important social media monitoring is to their PR and overall message but have begun to hire marketers to work on this in house with them. Unfortunately, there is one major problem with this mindset.

Unless you have worked hands on with social networks and really experienced all their nuances (i.e. Facebook is a completely different beast than Twitter) then hiring someone to come take care of this could be the worst thing for your online public reputation especially if something goes wrong. With social giving the ability for anyone to voice their opinions good or bad, comes the added pressure of knowing of how to monitor and react to negative comments.

The businesses who have understood the sophistication of this will be the ones who will still be standing in 4 or 5 years and will likely not have just one general marketer handling all their social media strategies.
